Both boys work to establish and maintain order and harmony with the rest of the group and are kind and protective in their interactions with the littluns. Ralph behaves and acts according to moral guidelines, but this behavior and these guidelines seem learned rather than innate. Ralph seems to have darker instinctual urges beneath: Simon, on the other hand, displays a goodness and kindness that do not seem to have been forced or imposed upon him by civilization.

He lives in accordance with the moral regulations of civilization simply because he is temperamentally suited to them: In the end, though Ralph is capable of leadership, we see that he shares the hidden instinct toward savagery and violence that Jack and his tribe embrace.

Although Ralph does prove an effective leader, it is Simon who recognizes the truth that stands at the core of the novel—that the beast does not exist in tangible form on the island but rather exists as an impulse toward evil within each individual.

Jack invokes different aspects of the beast depending on which effects he wants to achieve. Meaning that if you chose the second thesis you could infact tie in facts and examples found in history of human natures way of regressing back to savagery when left to its own accord.

The second thesis could be easier if the person who assigned the paper doens't mind you using examples from other sources to prove your thesis If you want to go strictly by the book then i say go with our first thesis.

BE sure to include quotes and passages from Lord of the Flies to support your thesis. If you find a passage that even slightly supports your thesis it wouldn't hurt to add it in to your paper I'm not much help, but your last paragraph sums up the whole point of the book.

These were perfectly diciplined public school boys, the future of their country, and it took so little to turn them into sectarian savages. It is a parable of human nature. It could be compared to theories on human behaviour after a theoretical nuclear hohlcaust, or the actuality of the Holocaust, or Mao's Chinaor the Russian purges. It's about how absolute power corrupts absolutely. When the boys keep the signal fire from burning out, it's a sign that they really want to be rescued and returned to the society.

As the fire reduces in intensity, the boys keep on getting comfortable with their savagery on the island and losing the desire to be rescued. On this accord, the signal fire becomes a scale for signifying the amount of remaining civilized instinct. Paradoxically, towards the conclusion, a ship is signaled by a fire to the island but the fire was not any of the two signal fires. The fire that signaled the ship was a savagery fire which was lit by Jack's gang in the quest for Ralph's blood. An imaginary beast representing the primal savagery instinct existing in all human beings frightens the boys.

It's only Simon who realizes that they fear the beast because it exists in each one of them. As the savagery of the boys grows, so does their belief in the beast. Towards the conclusion, they are regarding it as a totemic god and leaving sacrifices for it. As evidenced in Lord of the Flies symbolism essay, their behavior tends to exhibit the image of the beast for the more savage they become the more real beast becomes as well.

The Lord of the Flies is symbolized by the bloody head of the sow that Jacks plants on a spike in the forest glade.
