Rather dense reading where you have to slow down and pay attention to detail because White is very witty. I had a difficult time rating this book. There were a handful of essays I really liked--mostly the autobiographical ones. I always think of EBW as a kind grandfatherly figure, but he lived quite the eclectic, adventurous, activist life. However there were many essays that just didn't seem relevant or interesting to me. When I did a mathematica I had a difficult time rating this book.
When I did a mathematical analysis I ended up with a 2. Feb 13, Kathy rated it it was amazing. I am not an essay fan or a short fan but you cannot get better than E. I can't believe I've gone 65 years without anyone suggesting I read them. They're fabulous and in both political and environmental they're unfortunately very much on target. Sometimes it was hard to believe I was reading a piece written 50 plus years ago and not written recently. I highly recommend them to anyone.
Jul 25, Jana Light rated it really liked it. White is so good at describing the seemingly-mundane, not in a way that transforms it into something magical, but in a way that simply brings to light all that is actually going on in the world around us.
I want to develop his poetically scientific or is that scientifically poetic? It's damn near spiritual. Feb 06, Dave rated it it was amazing. White was a great essayist. If you want to spend a month reading an essay every morning I highly recommend this book. Whether it was observations of life on the farm and by the sea in Maine, or the ever changing world of New York in the 's - 60's, White does a masterful job of describing what he sees and experiences.
This was worth the time it took to read, and I have a feeling I'll be dipping into it again and again. Mar 01, Lorraine rated it it was amazing. I read this a long time ago, and I believe it is time to revisit it. I remember reading one essay a night right before bed. It was like treating myself to a piece of great dark chocolate before bed.
It took me so long to finish this book, because I didn't want it to end. Having acquired several more books of this lovely man's writing, I finally braved the final essay. White is without a doubt one of my favorite writers. In fact, I'm still humming 'Getting to Know You', even though, alas, he has not been with us since White was a writer for The New Yorker magazine from its beginning in ; however, even before that he was quite the adventurer. One of the most delightful and It took me so long to finish this book, because I didn't want it to end.
One of the most delightful and humorous pieces I've ever read is 'The Years of Wonder', regarding an adventure few have had when he was young and taking chances of the sort that generally only youth will take. There are stories of his youth, life as a writer, as a writer for the magazine, stories from the city and about life on his farm in New Hampshire. Because these are essays, it's a book that it's easy to put down and pick up again later.
What a lovely human being he was, and his spirit is certainly alive and kicking in his work. I don't feel as though I've read a book so much as made a new friend!
Having just finished reading "The Essays of E. White", I feel as though I have lost a friend. I can't recall ever feeling so sad at finishing a book-- not because the book itself was sad, but because it was wonderful, and its author was wonderful. I grew up with White's three children's books-- which I still love now as an adult-- but I had only read one of his essays "Once More to the Lake" before this. To be fair, I will admit that I didn't love every bit of every single essay, but every e Having just finished reading "The Essays of E.
To be fair, I will admit that I didn't love every bit of every single essay, but every essay did have parts that I loved. The world is a better place for having had White in it, and I'm heartbroken that I could never know him personally. I will definitely be seeking out more of White's writings now, so I can keep getting to know this long-lost friend I never really had.
Forty-four years ago, my English Comp professor dissected White's "This is New York" as an example of what it means to write well. I've loved White's work ever since, and it was now high time I reread some of his best essays. Truly a master of the form. Oct 25, Larry Putt rated it it was amazing. White is a master of the essay. I found the essays of his time on his farm to be both heartfelt and amusing. When I finished the book I felt sad because it was like I was saying goodbye to an old friend.
White - an American treasure! I've never gotten into essays, but maybe I am now after reading the Essays of E. My first encounter with White, not counting Charlotte's Web , was the The Elements of Style , which I consider one of the most essential and practical books in writing.
Seeing that I have an essay exam coming up, I thought his essays should reflect the school of clear prose advocated in the Elements of Style. This collection turned out to be more than ordinary study material.
The essays were written from I've never gotten into essays, but maybe I am now after reading the Essays of E. The essays were written from to as late as They are categorized into seven sections: As I looked at the table of contents, I wondered how the co-writer of The Elements would tackle teach subject.
White came from a very patriotic generation, one that went through two world wars. The generation gap separating us is massive. Keeping that mind, I began reading the foreword. The essayist is a self-liberated man, sustained by the childish belief that everything he thinks about, everything that happens to him, is of general interest. He is a fellow who thoroughly enjoys his work, just as people who take bird walks enjoy theirs.
Each new excursion of the essayist, each new "attempt," differs from the last and takes him into new country. Only a person who is congenitally self-centered has the effrontery and the stamina to write essays. Immediately I caught the hint of the smart-ass and an naturalist.
This will be fun, I thought to myself. White's essays are the living embodiment of The Elements of Style. He writes straightforwardly with a humbling degree of honesty. His elegant prose transported my mind to the places he wrote about in his essays. I felt the winter chill of his snowy Maine farm, despite my reading his essay in the California sunshine of June.
His work is timeless like an ancient redwood standing firm among the raging technical progress of modernity. My early doubts about too many years keeping us from sharing a common ground were surprisingly discredited.
White's essay of visiting the World Fair is an exercise in the disillusionment of technology. At the World Fair, the participants were presented "the world of tomorrow. While mostly everyone was wowed by the promised future, White looked on with suspicion. The voice of Mr. Kaltenborn in the City of Man says, "They come with joyous song," but the truth is there is very little joyous song in the Fair grounds. There is a great deal of electrically transmitted joy, but very little spontaneous joy.
Tomorrow's music, I noticed, came mostly from Yesterday's singer. In fact, if Mr. Whalen wants a suggestion from me as to how to improve his show and I am reasonably confident he doesn't , it would be to snip a few wires, hire a couple of bands, and hand out ticklers. Gaiety is not the keynote of Tomorrow. I finally found it at the tag end of a chilly evening, far along in the amusement area, in a tent with some black people. There was laughing and shouting there, and a beautiful brown belly dancer.
While I did find a few essays too boring to read, the the entire book is redeemed by the inclusion of the New York essay. That essay is living magic and a masterpiece of the Elements of Style school of writing. For this reason I gave the book five stars. I'm very glad to have found this book. White speaks so clearly through his prose that it creates the interesting sensation of him defying death.
I was also surprised to see him break several of the Elements of Style's rules, which states not to write any words, sentences, or paragraphs that don't do work.
There were plenty of times when White took detours while getting to his essay's destination. Yet, I think I understand why he choose to commit these minor violations. He did it because he enjoyed writing the same way he enjoyed his walks through the woods.
Writing essays and living wasn't a race for White. I wish the World of Today could have a similar realization. Elements of Style rap song Jan 16, Ann McReynolds rated it it was amazing. There are no discussion topics on this book yet.
